Abstract Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is one the most cost-effective surgical procedures.A time passes, the indications for its performance are widening. However, despite being a widely successful operation, failure of component of total hip replacement and revision may occur. According to recent reports: The most common aetiologies of revision THA procedures were dislocation (17.3%), closely followed by mechanical loosening(16.8%).Mechanical loosening is the most common indication for acetabular component revision (21.7%), and all-component revision (19.3%).The following options are the current options used in acetabular reconstruction: Reconstruction rings, Trabecular Metal augment and shell, bone impaction grafting with metal mesh, hemispherical implant with hook and flanges or structural allograft with cup, cup-cage reconstruction,Cementless jumbo cups and a custom-made component.Cages are used to provide mechanical stability to the acetabular construct and to protect allografts or metal cups and/or augments by offloading them by transmitting the load through the cage to the pelvic bone. The role of cages was the subject of this study |
