Abstract

Vancomycin is one of the most widely used antibiotics for the treatment of serious gram-positive infections but it has a hepato and nephrotoxic potential when taken in overdoses and can cause acute liver and kidney injury.
Pomegranate is an ancient magic plant with high nutritional and medicinal value. Fruits, seeds, peel, rind and leaves have been extensively used in traditional medicine for treatment of various diseases.
The current study was outlined to look into the protective effect of the ethanolic extract of punica peel against vancomycin induced hepato and nephrotoxicity in rats.
Fifty adult albino rats weighting 120 – 150 gm were divided into five equal groups after 2 weeks of acclimatization, ten rats each as follow :
The 1st group:
Rats in this group were kept as non-treated control group received 0.5 ml intraperitoneal injection of distalled water.
The 2nd group:
Rats in this group orally received punica peel extract once a day for 2 weeks at a dose of 10mg / 100gm B.Wt .
The 3rd group:
Rats in this group received vancomycin by intraperitoneal injection every other day for 2 weeks at a dose of 44.36mg / 100gm B.Wt.
The 4th group:
Rats in this group received punica peel extract orally for 2 weeks once a day at a dose of 10mg / 100gm B.Wt followed by vancomycin intraperitoneal injection every other day for 2 weeks at a dose of 44.36mg / 100gm B.Wt.
