Abstract

Deliberate self-poisoning has become an increasingly common response to emotional distress in young adults, and it is now one of the most common reasons for emergency hospital admissions. In developing countries, the substances commonly for self-poisoning are agricultural pesticides. Overcall case fatality ranges from 10-20 %.
Acute pesticide poisoning due to intentional self- harm exerts a burden on the health care system and is responsible for great morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Organophosphorus compounds and other pesticides are commonly used for suicidal attempts, because of their availability.
Poisoning severity score (PSS) is a standardized scale for grading the severity of poisoning allows qualitative evaluation of morbidity due to poisoning, better identification of real risks and comparability of data. The PSS is a classification scheme for cases of poisoning in adults and children. This score should be used for the classification of acute poisoning regardless of the type and number of agents involved. The PSS should consider the overall clinical course and be applied to the most severe symptomatology including both subjective symptoms and objective signs. So, it is normally a retrospective process requiring follow up of cases.
The aim of the work was to predict the outcome of suicide in adolescents using insecticides according to the poisoning severity score (Poisoning Severity Score (PSS) IPCS/EAPCCT) in patients presenting in the Emergency Department.
PATIENTS: The present work was conducted on 100 patients presenting to the Emergency Medicine Department of Alexandria Main University Hospital between October 2018 and March 2019 to predict the outcome of suicide according to the Poison Severity Score (PSS) and fulfilling the criteria.
METHODS: Observational prospective survey was conducted on 100 patients to collect data that include all adolescent patients attempting suicide with acute insecticide poisoning who were attend emergency department of Alexandria Main University Hospital within six months and fulfilling the inclusion criteria.
