Abstract

Corticosteroids are drugs used for treatment of steroid responsive dermatoses. They are principally used for their anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and immunosuppressive properties. Misuse of TCs appears to be a worldwide problem, as reported by many studies. It is an important public health problem where several sectors are involved. chronic misuse of TCs results in topical corticosteroid addiction (TCA) causing dependence on them. TCs misuse leads to various local and systemic side effects. Local side effects of TCs are more common than systemic side effects. The commonest cutaneous adverse excessive psychological and cutaneous effect of TCs is steroid atrophy. The aim of this study was to know the awareness among people about various commonly available topical steroids and their combinations and to evaluate the problem of misuse of these drugs among Egyptian dermatological patients. We hoped that our results may help to raise the awareness about these drugs and its side effects among the medical personnel and the public. This questionnaire-based study included 1000 patients using or previously used TCs and its combinations presented to dermatology, andrology and STDs department, Mansoura university hospital.
