Abstract

Background: GarciniaMangostana (GMA) gel has a potential anti-inflammatory property as local delivery drug (LDD), which helps improving periodontal status in chronic periodontitis patients. Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF)lactate dehydrogenase enzyme has been suggested to be a marker of chronic periodontitis. Chlorhexidine is a broad-spectrum biocide effective against Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. Aim: 1.It to evaluate the effect of GMA extract gel as a local drug delivery in the treatment ofchronicperiodontitis. 2.Assessment of Lactate dehydrogenase enzyme levels (LDH) in GCF on patients with chronic periodontitis. Subjects and Methods: This study was carried out on 30 patients (15 males and 15 females). Those patients were diagnosed as having moderate chronic periodontitis according to the clinical and radiographic criteria. In addition to five healthy subjects as control. Clinical parameters (Gingival Index, Plaque Index, Clinical Attachment Level, probing Pocket Depth) were recorded at baseline and after 4 weeks of treatment. GCF samples were collected at baseline and 4 weeks after treatment. All patients received scaling and root planing once a week for one month, the test sites in addition to SRP were locally injected with GMAgel. Result: The clinical parameters (PI, GI, PD, CAL) showed highlystatistically significant improvement in the test sites (SRP + GMA). Additionally the test group showed statistically significant reduction in GCF LDH than in control group p<0.001. Conclusions: The local application of GMA gel offers a promising therapeutic approach in periodontal treatment as adjunct to SRP.
