Abstract The present study was conducted to throw the light on the effects of norfloxacin on pregnant rats and developing foeti during both the gestation and suckling period. The tested drug was orally administered in a therapeutic dose (35 mg/Kg B.wt) and double therapeutic dose (70 mg/Kg B.wt) twice daily. This study was conducted in two experiments 1st and 2nd groups: - 1st Experiment: (on 30 mature female albino after being pregnant and being in zero day of gestation) Effects of norfloxacin on developing foeti during gestation period, rats were divided into three equal groups (each of 10), On the 20th day, each dam was weighed, anaesthetized and caesarian sections were performed to determine the effects of tested drug on foetal development by morphological, visceral, skeletal and histopathological examinations. - 2nd Experiment: (on 15 mature female albino). Effects of norfloxacin on mortality, growth rates, body weights and histopathological structure of dam’s, neonate’s liver and kidney during suckling period: Results: Administration of norfloxacin in both therapeutic and double therapeutic doses to clinically healthy pregnant rats can induce some adverse effects and teratogenicity on developing foeti, neonates and dams during gestation and suckling period in a dose dependent manner. |
