Abstract

The environmental concerns related to the production of Portland cement (PC) in terms of the energy consumption and the emission of CO2 led to the search for more environmentally viable binder construction material alternatives to PC. Researcher efforts in this domain revealed geopolymer based materials as environmentally friendly construction materials that need only moderate energy to be produced. Geopolymer composites exhibit superior mechanical properties, durability performances as well as thermal resistance comparable to those for Portland cement composites. As a result to its superior properties beside its environmental benefits, geopolymer based materials are widely used in construction applications as a good alternative material to PC. Moreover, ferrocement composites are considered one of these attractive applications due to the low self-weight, lack of skilled workers, no need of framework etc. To combine the benefits of using geopolymers as an eco-friendly binder material as well as the benefits related to ferrocement, an attempt had been made through the present study to investigate the flexural behaviour of geopolymer ferrocement composites that can support its proper applications in the corresponding situations. Moreover, adding metakaolin (MK) and fibers by different ratios to improve its flexural behavior, toughness, ductility ratio and crack pattern. The present study had been divided into three major phases: In phase І; a preliminary study had been conducted to investigate the effect of varying each of (morality of sodium hydroxide solution (NH)), ratio of sodium silicate to sodium hydroxide solutions (NS : NH) and ratio of alkaline solution to fly ash (AS: FA)) on both of setting times for geopolymer pastes as well as hardened properties for geopolymer mortars. In phase ІІ; the flexural behavior of geopolymer ferrocement composites was investigated. The influence of several parameters including variable thickness of panels (25, 30 and 35 mm), different numbers of wire mesh layers (one, double and triple layers), different types of wire mesh (woven, welded and expanded) and using different shapes of panels plate and folded in addition to the effect of replacement of fly ash by MK by 10% and 20% on the flexural behaviour was investigated. In phase ІІІ, the flexural behavior of fibrous geopolymer ferrocement composites was investigated. Two types of fibers including steel fibers (SF) and polypropylene fibers (PPF) with different fiber volume fractions (1% and 2%) were considered.
