Abstract

Background: Cognitive impairment is detected within cases of HCV with slight hepatic impairment but Little information is available about the pathophysiology. Cases with HCV attain pattern of neurocognitive deficits indicative of frontal subcortical impairment , in the form of forgetfulness, attention and concentration problems , improper word recall, and delayed reaction times. These deficits were reported within 13–50% of cases with chronic HCV infection via comprehensive neuropsychological test panels. Patients and Methods: This is a Case-control study that had done at the department of Neuropsychiatry Kafr Elsheikh University Hospital on fifty consecutive adult patients (age range: 20–50 years ).Those patients with uncomplicated chronic viral hepatitis attending to outpatient clinic at Kafr Elsheikh university hospital between March 2017 and March 2018 were selected for this study. In additional to fifty healthy controls matched with respect to age, sex, educational level, socioeconomic status. Results: Cognitive dysfunction in different filed recorded in the present study was in accordance with the preceding outcomes that frontal subcortical systems in HCV patients Conclusion chronic hepatitis C patients with mild or no liver affection exhibit symptoms of fatigue, depression/anxiety and impaired quality of life. They also show evidence of cognitive impairment, neurophysiological disturbance in HCV infection. These results could therefore indicate a direct or indirect action of the HCV on the brain.
