Abstract

This is one of the studies that was conducted to assess the prevalence of PIU among undergraduate university students in upper Egypt. Additionally, the study investigated some predictors of PIU and its different dimensions among the Egyptian undergraduate university.
Our study included 588 students,196 student from Two practical faculities (faculty of Veterinary Medicine and faculty of Science) and 392 students from Two theoretical faculities (faculty of Arts and faculty of commerce).12 students were excluded on the basis of in complete questionnaires.
To conclude, in this study we found that nearly one third of the students were Potentialy problematic internet use.
We showed that Potentialy problematic internet use significantly more in theoretical faculities than in practical faculities.
We revealed that young age, male gender,1st grade,low academic performance, high and moderate monthly income, presence of computer at home, Availability of internet at home, using Internet for chatting and gaming, strong predictors of potentialy problematic internet use .
We found that there is significant association between high score in Psychoticism and Neuroticism and low score in Lie and Extraversion and potentialy problematic internet use .
Also, we found that there is significant association between moderate and sever anxiety and potentialy problematic internet use .
Also,We revealed that there is significant association between moderate and sever anxiety depression and potentialy problematic internet use .
The overall picture that emerges from this study is that PIU prevalent disorder among undergraduate university students in upper Egypt.
We concluded that clinicians and health professionals should be aware of the risk of potentialy problematic internet use in students with Anxiety ,Depression and in students with high Psychoticism and Neuroticism and low Lie and Extraversion triats.
This paper highlights prevalence of PIU disorder among undergraduate university students in upper Egypt and also investigated some predictors of PIU.
Recommedations
We recommend the following;
- The impact of PIA on public health must be investigated with larger studies.
- Seminars, conferences and activities could be organized to highlight the negative consequences of problematic internet use(PIU).
-The uses of internet for chat, entertainment (e.g., game) and social networking purposes can be considered as risky activities for students.
- Internet usage should be replaced by healthy activities like practicing yoga, exercising, meditation joining some team sports.
-Counseling to help the university students to learn social skills and healthier ways of coping with uncomfortable emotions, such as stress, anxiety, or depression.
- More studies should be done to determine the causal relationship between PIA and psychosocial determinants.
- Further understanding of the relationship between PIA and different characteristics of students must be evaluated and investigated in more and larger studies.
-Another study to evaluate the prognosis and long term follow up for students with PIA.
-We should emphasize that a proper assessment of the risks and benefits of the use of antidepressant drugs and other drugs for ttt of PIA.
- Techniques based on cognitive–behavioural therapy (CBT) to treat students suffering from PIA should be evaluated.
- Cognitive behavioral therapy can help to stop compulsive internet behaviors change the perceptions regarding Internet, smart phone, and computer use.
