Abstract A Stroke is the primary neurologic problem in the world and the third leading cause of death worldwide. Older adults are more affected by stroke and the majority of stroke survivors have a disability .Training Caregivers in skills have play a prominent role throughout the post stroke recovery improvement process .The aim was to evaluate the effect of family caregivers training program on elderly patients’ functional status post-stroke. Subjects and methods; A quasi-experimental design was utilized to conduct this study. Setting: The study was conducted in neurological department and neurological ICU at Sednawy hospitals and cerebral stroke units at university hospital in Zagazig City. Sample: A purposive sample of 105 elderly patients and their caregivers subjects who fulfilled the study inclusion criteria. Tools: three tools were used. Tool I: A structured interview questionnaire which included (demographic characteristics of studied elderly, Medical and stroke history of the elderly patients, data about studied caregivers of elderly patients with stroke and data about caregivers’ knowledge), Tool II: caregivers’ practices (observation checklist) of elderly patient’s care. Tool III Functional Independence Measure .The study findings revealed that post the training program there were statistically significant improvements in the caregivers’ knowledge, practices and elderly’s functional Independence score P < 0.01. Conclusion: the training program is effective in improving caregivers’ knowledge, practices and functional status of elderly patient. Recommendation: The education program should be implemented in the study setting on a long term basis to test its sustainability, and in other settings to confirm its effectiveness and for further improvements.
