Abstract

Background: There is no intervention guidelines depicted for improving the performance of nurses towards inotropic medication administration, which emphasizes the importance of implementing teaching guidelines for improving nurses’ performance, Aim of the study: Evaluate effect of guidelines regarding administering inotropic medications for critically ill patients on nurses’ knowledge and practice, Design: Quasi-experimental research design was used in the study. Setting: The present study was carried out at Critical Care Units affiliated to the Suez Canal University Hospital, Sample: A convenient sample of all available staff nurses (60 nurses) who were working at the previously mentioned settings, Tools of data collection: The data were collected using two tools named nurses’ knowledge assessment questionnaire and nurses’ observational checklist, Results: The majority of studied nurses had significant satisfactory level of knowledge and practice regarding inotropic medications post intervention guidelines. The post and follow up-intervention mean knowledge and practice score was high, when compared with pre-intervention mean knowledge and practice score, Conclusion: There was statistically significant improvement in the nurses’ knowledge and practice mean scores regarding inotropic medications in post and follow-up implementing guidelines when compared with pre-intervention nurses’ knowledge and practice mean score, Recommendations: Apply the designed intervention guidelines supported with evidence based practices for administering inotropic medications.
