Abstract

Diabetic foot considered as a common complication of diabetes and is responsible for considerable morbidity, disability and mortality among geriatric patients with diabetes. It can be prevented and controlled by appropriate foot care. Aim of the study: The present study aimed to evaluate effect of health education program on foot care among the elderly diabetic patients.Design:Aquasi-experimental pre-test-and-post-test design was utilized to conduct this study. Setting: The study was conducted at the health insurance clinic of the elderly diabetic patients in comprehensive diabetic clinic at Zagazig city.Sample: A Purposive sampling of 90 diabetic elderly patients who fulfilled the study inclusion criteria. Tools: three tools were used in the present study; the first tool was a structured interview questionnaire consisted of three parts(Socio Demographic characteristics, past and present medical history of diabetes and Assessment of knowledge of diabetic foot ),the second tool was foot care practice questionnaire& the third tool was observational sheet to assess foot condition. Results: The study findings revealed that Diabetic elderly patients age ranged from 60 to 80 years, were married (57.8%) and illiterate (33.3%). More diabetic elderly patients were living in rural areas (54.4%),and(84.4%) living with their family. Elderly had deficient related knowledge and foot care. The educational program was effective in improving their knowledge, foot care practice.Conclusion: The educational program is effective in improving the diabetic patients knowledge related foot care. The implementation of educational program is also effective in improving diabetic patients, foot-care practicesRecommendations: Diabetic health education programs should be developed on a community level to increase positive attitudes towards diabetic care in general and foot care in specific.
