Abstract
Invention of IOLs was a huge step of cataract surgery towards patient
satisfaction. The first IOL was implanted by Sir Harold Ridley on 29
November 1949, at St Thomas’ Hospital in London. Though frustrated in his
attempts by high incidence of postoperative complications such as glaucoma,
uveitis, and dislocation, Ridley set the stage for a period of advances in cataract
surgery that continues to this day and he was knighted for his contributions.
Since then, several different materials, designs and technologies were invented
