Abstract

The impairment of the immune system with age, i.e. the immunosenescence, exerts a great influence on the increasing morbidity and mortality in aging organisms. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to address the influence of both constant light exposure and high-fat diet feeding on accelerating the immunosenescence and to assess the ameliorative effect of both melatonin and turmeric on both normal and accelerated immunosenescence. Sixty six young adult male albino rats and thirty six aged male albino rats were used in this study. Three separate experiments were performed throughout the course of the present work which lasts for 12 weeks. This study indicates that each of constant light exposure and high- fat diet feeding accelerates immunosenescence in young adult rats via oxidative stress and apoptotic pathways. It also reveals that co-administration of melatonin and turmeric was able to reverse the changes induced by both natural and accelerated immunosenescence. Moreover, this is the first study exploring the underlying molecular mechanisms of immunosenescence under each of constant lighting conditions and high-fat diet feeding.
