Abstract
This study dealt with the description of the southern part of Al-Shari’ al-A’zam, extending from Bab Zuwaila in the north to Mashhad al-Sayyida Nafisah in the south. It includes nine streets, since its inception until now. It dealt with the restoration for some of its buildings. Especially the Mosque of Ghanem al-Bahlawan. It sheds light on the Islamic monuments and their history at the most important street in Fatimid Cairo. It tells the history of Egypt since the time of the Fatimid state until now. It dealt also with the inscriptions of this part of the street, whether published before or published here for the first time. This is followed by a synopsis on the Arabic calligraphy, its development over the past centuries, the forms of scripts that took precedence over ages - hard and soft. It als o dealt with the masters in this respect, to whom calligraphers owe a great deal. It referred also to the various madrassas of calligraphy that played an important role in developing the scripts, the most prominent of these was the Turkish.
Moreover, all the panels of inscriptions at the southern part of Al-Shari’ al-A’zam were numerated. They amounted to 358 and they were described archaeologically in terms of their content, forms, scripts, implementation method, the calligrapher that carried out them in addition to other relevant information.
This was followed by an analysis of the contents of these inscriptions by studying each of the previous elements apart, while trying to make use of the contents of these panels of inscriptions to conceptualize the form of the political, economic and social life in the era of their construction. They were utilized to identify some information that may be useful to resolve some of the ambiguities or differences on one of the antiquities, its originator, its type, architect - the supervisor of its construction - and the names of calligraphers who have written these commemorative inscriptions on them. The study also addressed the titles that appeared in these inscriptions and showed their diversity and evolution in terms of strength and weakness. It highlighted the difference between the titles throughout ages and the introduction of some titles in other eras. They are shown in the inscriptions of restoring the monument.
The last section of the study dealt with how to take advantage of the monuments of Al-Shari’ al-A’zam in attracting tourists, placing the Islamic monuments on the tourist map in Egypt, how to use these inscriptions in the field of tourist guidance, how to increase guides’ knowledge and facilitate their work, how to develop a tourist program to visit the landmarks of this street after their restoration. It took into consideration the development and adding the street to the open museum in Al-Mu’izz Le-Din-Illah, which represents the middle part of the street.
The study concluded with the most important findings, suggestions and recommendations. This was followed by the titles of sources, references, scientific theses and writings of orientalists. It concluded with the photo album, all of which were taken by the researcher and most of them for inscriptions of the monuments at al-Shari’ al-A’zam to the south of Fatimid Cairo. This album aimed at helping those wishing to see some examples of these inscriptions but they are unable to visit the monuments of the street.
