Abstract The present study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of using a proposed ESP online course in developing translation skills of Technical Health Institute students. The targeted translation sub-skills were: Collocations, abbreviations, polysemy, word morpheme, word combination, conditionals, active and passive voice, cohesion, phrasal verbs and modal verbs. The study adopted the quasi-experimental design using one group. A pre – post translation skills test was used to measure students’ translation skills before and after the treatment. The proposed ESP online course lasted for 5 weeks (2 sessions per week, each session lasted for two hours). The instruments used were: A translation checklist for identifying the translation skills required for the Technical Health Institute students and a pre- post translation test to measure the difference in the students’ performance with regard to the above mentioned translation sub-skills. t-test and Eta-square (η2) values were used to analyze the data statistically. Findings indicated that the proposed ESP online course proved to be effective in developing the translation skills of Technical Health Institute students. In the light of the results and conclusions of this study, it was recommended that: Translation skills should receive more attention so as to be enhanced using modern technology in teaching and testing. |
