Abstract

Childhood overweight and obesity is a global public health problem since it increases the risk of premature death, as well as developing Diabetes, cancer, heart diseases, and many other physical, psychological or social consequences in adulthood that may persist lifelong if not treated properly Thus, pediatric obesity is regarded as one of the priority health issues, and the treatment of childhood obesity and its complications may be one of the most effective strategies to reducing morbidities and mortalities and to saving hospital costs later in life. The aim of this study was to improve child health & prevent health hazards related to obesity. This was achieved through determination of prevalence and identify risk factors of obesity among preschool children.
The study was conducted in the family health unit of (TokhDalaka) village, which was randomly selected from 26 villages in Tala district. The study included preschool children aged 2-5years attending the selected family health unit for regular visits.
The study was conducted in the context of time frame of seventeen months from February 2018 till July 2019. All the children included in the study were evaluated using the two questionnaires: self-designed questionnaire to assess the socio-demographic characteristics, past history, dietary habits and their maternal feeding behavior. The second questionnaire is a predesigned to assess child eating behavior: Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire.
Body mass index and hemoglobin level were measured to all participants. The study concluded that the overall prevalence of combined overweight and obesity among the studied group was 21% (15% for obese & 6% for obese).
BMI was significantly higher among those aged from3-4 years old (46.7%) among males 80%, among those from rural areas about 92% of overweight and 60% of obese children, among children whose mothers were highly educated (86.7%).
There was a significant relationship between BMI and frequency of junk food as 75% of overweight children were eating junk food daily also eating fried food 1-2 times/per week was significantly more frequent among overweight children (67.6%). dinner was the main meal/day in about47% of obese&54% of overweight children versus 21% of normal BMI children and about 93% of obese children had no outdoor activities and 100% of them did not practice sport regularly which were statistically significant too.
As regard maternal feeding behavior 81% of overweight,93% of obese children were eating alone, (86.5% of overweight, 80% of obese) their mothers offer sweets regularly and about 93% of obese children their mothers were concerned about being overweight Also, more than 83% of overweight children their mothers did not keep foot out of reach which were statistically significant.
As regard Child Eating Behavior: score of the child eating behavior questionnaire was significantly higher among obese children as regard food responsiveness, emotional overeating, enjoyment of food and food fussiness however, mean±SD was significantly higher among average weight children as regard satiety responsiveness, while the score was significantly lower among obese children as regard slowness of eating.
