Abstract Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a medical condition due to compression of the median nerve as it travels through the wrist at the carpal tunnel. The main symptoms are pain, numbness and tingling in the thumb, index finger, middle finger and the thumb side of the ring fingers.(Burton et al .,2014)Symptoms typically start gradually and during the night. Pain may extend up the arm Weak grip strength may occur, and after a long period of time the muscles at the base of the thumb may waste away.(National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke 2016) In more than half of cases, both sides are affected.(Burton et al .,2014)Risk factors include obesity, repetitive wrist work, pregnancy, genetics, and rheumatoid arthritis. There is tentative evidence that hypothyroidism increases the risk. Diabetes mellitus is weakly associated with CTS. The use of birth control pills does not affect the risk.[3] Types of work that are associated include computer work, work with vibrating tools and work that requires a strong grip.(American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 2016)Some parameters such as age, gender, and body mass index (BMI) could be risk factors for CTS(Bodavula VK et al.,2007).Body mass index (BMI) represents an important risk factor for developing this compressive neuropathy due to increased forces in the carpal canal (Werner RA et al.,1994).BMI is a good indicator of body fat and it is calculated by dividing weight (kilogram) with the square of height (meter).(Kouyoumdjian JA et al.,2000) When the BMI value is over 30, it is classified as obesity. |
