Abstract

Alopecia areata (AA) is a dermatological disease characterized by non-scarring hair loss of hair bearing areas, with an unpredictable and variable evolution in the patients in which, despite multidisciplinary efforts, its etiology is not entirely known, although some evidence suggests that environmental, immunological and genetic factors could be generating the disease.Genetic predisposition, autoimmunity, and environmental factors play a major role in the etiopathogenesis of AA. Within other forms of AA , patchy is most common .In addition to physical effects such as disfigurement, alopecia areata has long lasting psychosocial effects that affect the patient’s quality of life. Depression, social isolation and suicidal ideation .Neurokinin A is a member of the tachykinin family of neuropeptide neurotransmitters. Neurokinin A may be involved in reactions to pain and the inflammatory responses. Depression, anxiety and stress scale 21, ( DASS-21) is the shortened version of the DASS to assess symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress among adults. In this study DASS 21 was used to assess the association of alopecia areata as a disease on depression , anxiety and stress of the patient . Stress and other psychological factors have been implicated in the occurance of the disease, and it is also found to alter the course of the disease process. Therefore , here in this study the impact of AA on the quality of life, which includes the social life of the patients.
