Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in females worldwide. Both breast cancer diagnosis and its treatment modalities create several psychiatric comorbidities such as depression and Anxiety.
Aim of the Study: to assess the rate of anxiety and depression and to examine the demographic, oncologic, and psychosocial associations to determine possible risk factors for having these disorders among breast cancer women.
Subjects and Methods: This study is a cross-sectional observational study, conducted on 175 breast cancer female patients attending Oncology Hospital at The Armed Forces Medical Complex in Maadi, in the period between September 2018 and September 2019.
Results: According to study, 46.3% of patients have depression & 37.1% of patients have anxiety, with most of patients showing mild to moderate severity of depression and anxiety. Course of cancer disease, advanced stage of cancer and past history of psychiatric interventions have a highly significant correlation with severity of depression and Anxiety. But, marital status (divorced or widow) is correlate only to depression severity while urban residence is highly significant with severity of anxiety. Also, socio-demographic variations, clinical progression of the cancer and the type of treatment show significance to the presence of depression and anxiety.
Conclusion: In this study, logistic regression analysis shows younger age, those with metastatic breast cancer and has delayed or not received hormonal therapy are more likely to have anxiety. For depression, those who are with poor social support such as widows and those with past psychiatric history, distant metastasis and advanced stage of breast cancer also has high probability of depression occurrence.
