Abstract

For any construction project, achieving the project budget within the planned estimated cost is a good indicator on success of the project management. The objective of this study is to assess the impact of the shop drawings and everything related to them in meeting project cost target. A comprehensive literature reviews as well as a survey for industry expert’s opinions to identify that impact have been carried out. 30 factors that may affect the accuracy of the cost estimation have been identified through a comprehensive literature review, and they have been validated via structured interviews. The Statistical analysis Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program has been used for statistical analysis of survey results. The main finding in this research is that the shop drawings have a real impact on the cost estimation process. The results analysis based on the Pareto role showed that 8 factors out of 30 factors have the most impact on the cost estimation process. These factors include the following: Improper planning and unavailability of cost index’s average, poor design and delay in providing it, size and location of the project, and inaccurate evaluation of the project duration. In addition to, incomplete of the drawings and detailed design required at time of tender, Failure to provide shop drawings at an early stage of the project, design change, and inadequate studying for tender documents before going out to it. The main result of this study is that the shop drawings have a direct impact on the project cost variance. In addition to, conclusion of the main factors that may cause delay in approvals of the shop drawings, and may affect cost estimation indirectly.
