Abstract

Summary:
The purpose of this study was to prove/disprove the theory of presence of bacterial origin for AO and evaluate the effectiveness of systemic Clindamycin administration and/or topical application of Clindamycin gel on its incidence.
This study was conducted on two hundred (200) Egyptian army soldiers from the outpatient clinic of the oral and maxillofacial surgery department, Kobry El Kobba Military Hospital, seeking the extraction of molars affected by an early stage of acute dento-avleolar abscess, pericoronitis or acute periodontal abscess. The study was done after the approval of ethics committee of Ain shams University.
Certain inclusion criteria were set for the patients in this study, this included: age range between 20-25 years old, being medically free, only molars were included and presence of infection as a risk factor for developing AO.
The exclusion criteria of the patients in this study were: those with diseases contra-indicating dental extractions, or patients with systemic diseases affecting healing such as Diabetes Mellitus, or those under any other interfering medications (anti-depressants or immune-suppressive drugs) to avoid the effect of these drugs on the results of the study. Also teeth requiring surgical extraction or having abnormal alignment or root morphology were excluded. The patients lacking cooperation, or with limited mouth opening were also excluded.
