Abstract Nephrotic syndrome is a well-recognised chronic illness in childhood. There is marked urinary loss of proteins such as albumin, hormones and hormones binding proteins leading to reduce the binding capacity for thyroid hormones, resulting in a decrease in total tri-iodothyronine (T3) and thyroxin (T4) concentrations. The present study had been performed at Pediatric Nephrology clinic and Pediatric Inpatient department at Sohag University Hospital from January to December ,2017. It included 51 patients with nephrotic syndrome . we found that during nephrotic attack serum albumin and serum total proteins were low while serum cholesterol and triglycerides were high . We found that the studied patients have high serum TSH level while serum TT3 and TT4 were reduced during nephrotic attack. Our study showed that during nephrotic attack about 47% of study group had subclinical hypothyroidism , while overt hypothyroidismwas found in 23% of studied patients. We found that only one case of nephrotic patients has overt hypothyroidism and about 27% of them have subclinical hypothyroidism after remission. We concluded from this study that nephrotic syndrome patients have a state of hypothyroidism so, we recommended routine thyroid screening in patients with nephrotic syndrome. |
