Abstract

Duane syndrome is characterized by abduction deficiency, narrowing of the palpebral fissure with retraction of the globe with or without upshoot or down shoot on adduction. Indications of surgery are significant horizontal deviation in primary gaze, abnormal head posture, marked globe retraction and upshoot or down shoot on adduction. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of both y-splitting recession and isolated recession of the lateral rectus muscle in management of duane syndrome as regard to improvement of mechanical upshoot, elimination of exo deviation and correction of abnormal head posture. This study included 20 eyes of 20 patients with duane syndrome. The patients were divided randomly into two groups. All patients in both groups had complete preoperative ophthalmic examination and underwent to surgery. Postoperative they were examined one week one month 3 month 6 months with focussing in assessment of grade of upshoot the angle in primary position and degree of face turn.
