Abstract

Plate girders with corrugated webs have widely been used as bridge girders due to their superior advantages. These girders are composed of flat flange plates and corrugated web plates connected through continuous welding. The corrugations in webs increase the stability against buckling and can result in very economical design. The web corrugation profile can be viewed as uniformly distributed stiffening in the transverse direction of the girder. However, plate girders with corrugated webs utilizing only the trapezoidal corrugated webs are extensively investigated. Hence, this thesis studies those formed using composite beam with trapezoidal corrugated webs experimentally considering the important affecting factors. The factors are the corrugation depth and the ratio of fiber in slab. The results are then used to enhance the current design method of the plate girders with trapezoidal corrugated webs . This thesis presents experimental tests that were carried out to study the shear strength and behaviour of shear beams use fiber-reinforced composite corrugated plate girders with different ratios of fiber in the concrete while maintaining its distinctive resistance (fc\) under one point concentrated load. The Trapezoidally corrugated steel webs were designed to fail in shear by using enough thick flanges to eliminate the occurrence of the flexural failure mechanism. The experimental program involved the construction, instrumentation and testing of nine simply-supported trapezoidal corrugated steel webs.
