Abstract

In the present work, we synthesized several bis- and poly(imidazoles) derivatives by one-pot three-component reaction of 1,2-diketone with aldehydes and ammonium acetate in the presence of a catalytic amount of ZnO nanocatalyst. The reactions were performed under conventional heating as well as under microwave irradiation. A series of bis- and poly(benzimidazoles) as well as bis- and poly(benzothiazoles) were also prepared using different protocols. Additionally, several bis-(thiazoldin-4-one) analogues were synthesized via two-step reaction through Schiff base formation or via one pot three-component reaction of aromatic aldehyde, aromatic amine, and thioglycolic acid. The anticancer activities of the synthesized compounds were evaluated against human breast adenocarcinoma cell line (MCF-7), liver cancer cell line (HepG-2) and epithelial colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (CaCO-2). A computational docking studies for selected compounds against ERK2 kinase, EGFR tyrosine kinase, and vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) were performed to formulate a hypothetical mechanism by which the tested compound inhibits the growth of cancer cells.
