Abstract The present work was done to elucidate the impact of water quality in four different sites in Ismailia Governorate from (Ismailia Canal, EL-Hallos drain, Gabal Mariam drain and EL-Dawagen drain) fresh water, on the fish biology, physiological status, blood picture and accumulation of heavy metals in flesh of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus. Some physico-chemical parameters and heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni and Zn) concentrations were investigated in the water and fish muscles collected seasonally during 2018 from to assess the impact of water pollution on fish. It was found that, water temperature in the different fish sites irrespective seasons were insignificantly, however, the pH was slightly basic. The water dissolved oxygen was around the suitable limits. In these sites, the maximum levels of salinity, electric conductivity and total dissolved salts were recorded. The ammonia, nitrite and nitrate concentrations were revealed. The relative dominance of heavy metals in the water of the four investigated fish sites all over the period was studied. The muscle content of the detected heavy metals which accumulate in catfish’s muscle were in the order of Zn,Pb, Ni andCd all exceeded the permitted value, while Cu concentrations were within the permissible limit suggested by WHO.In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that high levels of some metals present in fish tissues which collected from the fish sites in Ismailia Governorate may affect their quality for use as food for human purposes |
