Abstract

Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), is a polypeptide which its structure is similar to the insulin molecule. While many tissues secrete IGF-1, 90% of circulating IGF-1 secretion is ocurring in the liver. Cirrhosis of liver is a condition accompanied by decreased level of IGF-1, in which the level of IGF-1 may be further decreased through the progression of the disease.Aim of the work:To assess the serum level of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) as a predictor for the severity of Hepatitis C Virus related liver cirrhosis. Patients and methods. The study was carried out on 90 chronic liver disease male patients group as well as 90 age, sex and BMI matched healthy males as a control group. The patient group subdivided according to Child-Puch score into 3 subgroups: Results: IGF-1 has statistically significant negative correlation with all Child pugh, FIB-4, MELD &APRI score.IGF-1 is correlated with variables related to liver dysfunctions like serum bilirubin, albumin, INR and platelet.Conclusions:IGF-1 synthesis is decreased in liver cirrhosis and reflects the severity of the clinical stage. It represents an index of hepatic function. Serum IGF-1 level can be used as a surrogate non-invasive marker for evaluating the severity of cirrhosis.
