Abstract Background: chronic wounds, including pressure sores, venous ulcers, and diabetic ulcers, are a major clinical problem with considerable morbidity and associated financial costs. Excessive MMPs are a feature of chronic wounds. Regulation of MMP levels in wounds could lead to improved wound healing. The aim of the work: This study aimed to study tissue MMP1 expression in recalcitrant Diabetic Foot Ulcers. Materials & methods: The study included 47 diabetic patients selected from clinic in the Specialized Medical Hospital with foot ulcers surface area more than 1cm submitted for assessment of peripheral neuropathy and peripheral arterial disease using 10 gram monofilament and Doppler, laboratory tests as CBC, HBA1C,Cholesterol, serum Cr,Fasting Blood Sugar. Results: Moderate expression of MMP1 at ulcer base was significantly associated with lower median ulcer surface area (good healing) than no expression. MMP1 and inflammation detected by pathology at ulcer base can predict ulcer healing by 48.8%. MMP1 base can significantly predict decrease ulcer surface area. Associated with lower median ulcer surface area (good healing) than no expression. However, there is no statistically significant association between MMP1 expression at ulcer edge and median ulcer surface area among studied cases. |
