Abstract

Aim: Colposcopy is a direct microscopic method which is the gold standard tool to
detect early cervical dysplastic lesions. Many authors have tried gynaecological
methods to examine the oral mucosa. The aim of this study is to detect the
diagnostic accuracy of the oral colposcopy in diagnosing oral dysplastic lesions in
comparison to biopsy taking and histopathological examination and compare between
Reid’s Colposcopic Index and Swede scoring system in diagnosing oral dysplastic
lesions.
Methodology: Twenty five patients seeking diagnosis of an oral leukoplakia in Oral
Medicine and Periodontology Department and meeting the criteria of selection were
recruited in this study. Each patient was subjected to colposcopic examination then
biopsy taking to confirm the result of the colposcope. The sensitivity and specificity
of oral colposcopy were calculated after colposcopic assessment using Swede scoring
system and Reid’s Colposcopic Index.
Results: Oral colposcopy’s accuracy using Swede score was superior to the
accuracy of oral colposcopy using Reid’s Colposcopic Index.
Conclusion: Colposcopic examination using Swede score is very specific in
diagnosing oral epithelial dysplasia allowing ’see-and-treat’ method, while using Reid’s
Colposcopic Index is a very sensitive screening method for oral epithelial dysplasia in
oral potentially malignant disorders.
