Abstract Objective: to evaluate the role of different interventional procedures in management of renal masses and perirenal collection. Methods: The study included 40 patients (26 males and 13 females), Their ages ranging from 21 to 80 years. The interventional procedures include the following: 1- radio-frequency ablation (RFA) of renal masses (10 cases). 2- Trans-catheter arterial embolization of renal masses (10 cases). 3- Per-cutaneous drainage of peri-renal collections (5 cases) and ablation of simple renal cysts (5 cases). 4- CT-guided biopsy of renal masses (10 cases). Statistical analysis: Data were analyzed with SPSS version 16. Results: RFA of renal masses under CT guidance is a therapeutic nephron-sparing option in patients refusing or unfit for surgery with success rate 100% according to the short term follow up. Angio-embolization of malignant renal masses facilitates their resection during surgery and angio-embolization of angiomyolipoma aids in stopping and preventing hemorrhage. Imaging-guided drainage of perirenal collections has a high success rate without need to anesthesia and surgery. US-guided ablation of simple renal cysts using alcohol is an easy and outpatient procedure that revealed complete resolution of the cysts during follow up. CT-guided biopsy of renal masses contributed in correct diagnosis and selection of the dedicated interventional procedure according to the type of the lesion. Conclusion: these results show that the interventional radiologic techniques have an effective role in management of renal and perirenal masses with low incidence of complications and lower hospitalization costs with respect to surgical treatment. |
