Abstract

Aim: to assess the efficiency of oral health education program on oral health knowledge,
attitude, practice and oral hygiene status among 12-14-years-old preparatory schoolgirls in Ras-Sed,
South Sinai, Egypt. Methodology: A before and after study was conducted among (n= 260) school
girls in four preparatory schools in Ras-Sedr, South Sinai, Egypt from September 2019 to December
2019. Before the oral health education program, the girls were assessed for their oral health knowledge,
attitude and practice using a self-administrated questionnaire and their oral hygiene status was assessed
using Oral Hygiene Index Simplified. Oral health education program was then provided using tailor
made posters and audiovisual aids. Follow-up was performed after 3 months using the same
questionnaire and oral hygiene index simplified was recorded after that. Results: it was found that
before oral health education program, knowledge of the girls was (57%), attitude (73%) and practice
(33%), after oral health education program the knowledge, attitude and practice of the girls improved
to (74%), (76%) and (37%) respectively.

Mean ± SD of (OHIS) was (1.05±0.36) before oral health education program but unfortunately
it increased to (1.49±1.53) after oral health education program. Conclusions: The oral health
educational program improved the girl’s knowledge, attitude, and practice but more efforts should be
performed towards the oral health of school children in Egypt.
