Abstract Consciousness is the ability to be in contact with reality and recognize the surroundings. It is mediated by the ascending reticular activating system (ARAS). Any lesion in the cerebral hemispheres and the axonal projections to the cortex or disruption in central nervous system either from neurological, metabolic, or toxicological causes, will cause disturbed consciousness.Disorders of consciousness have a wide spectrum of severity. They range from confusion up to deep coma and brain death. These changes vary according to the cause and they may occur over a period of hours or days. |
