Abstract

Applied behavior analysis interventions are one of the most effective evidence-based interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder. In addition, treatment methods that are systematically implemented following the principles of applied behavior analysis are best applied as early as possible in the life of a child with ASD. Aim: This study was aimed to evaluate the effect of an educational program about behavioral therapy techniques on knowledge and practice of autistic childrens’ parents about these techniques. Method: A quasi-experimental design was conducted on 68 parents of autistic children attending the following settings; Mansoura University Hospital (Department of Psychological and Mental Health), Demera Hospital for Psychological and Mental Health, and Port Said Hospital for Psychological and Mental Health within 6 months. Tools: A structured interview questionnaire sheet for Parent to assess their knowledge and reported practices about behavioral therapy techniques. Results indicated that, the results there was a strong positive correlation between parents’ knowledge and their reported practice of behavioral therapy techniques immediately before and after the implementation of the program as well as after 3 months, with statistically significant differences p <0.001 Conclusion: There was an improvement in the knowledge and practices of parents for autistic children about behavioral therapy techniques immediately after, and after three months of implementing an educational program on these techniques, compared to their knowledge and practices before the program was implemented. Recommendations: Apply intervention as early as possible to enhance children functioning by improving communication and socialization first.
