Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide metabolic disorder. Diabetes is divided into two types; Type-1 and type-2 are the two major forms of diabetes. Lupinus albus seeds are used to modulate the blood glucose level. This study pursued to examine the impacts of lupin extract and/or gliclazide administration on streptozotocin-diabetic rats. Fiftysix male albino rats were divided equally into 8 groups; control, lupine seed extract (7mg/100g BW), gliclazide (10mg/kg BW), combination, STZ diabetic, diabeticlupine treated, diabetic-gliclazide and diabetic-combination treated groups. The study lasted for one month, after which, hematological parameters, fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), serum insulin, lipid profile, urea, creatinine, nitric oxide (TNO) and pro-inflammatory cytokines levels and serum transaminases activities were estimated. Hepatic oxidative status and histopathology of pancreatic, hepatic and renal tissues were examined. Where, all the abovementioned analys were deteriorated due to diabetes. While, Lupin and/or gliclazide administration to diabetic rats, significantly decreased values of FBG, HbA1c, transaminases, urea, creatinine and cytokines, ameliorated the oxidative provoked injury and improved lipid profile, hematological and histopathological findings. Lupine and gliclazide showed a synergistic therapeutic role in the alleviation of lipid disorders and oxidative damage and repression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in diabetic rats. |
