Abstract

Seismic performance evaluation of building structures is an
innovative challenge for structural engineers and researchers. Since the
occurrence of 1992 earthquake on October, several improvements have
been introduced to the Egyptian code to provide the conditions and
recommendations required for earthquake resistant design of structures.
This research studies the seismic response behavior of reinforced concrete
(R.C) building having different types of slab system, That commonly
used in residential buildings such as solid slab , flat slab and hollow block
slab systems.
Static and dynamic analysis method are used to perform the analysis
following the Egyptian seismic design code requirements. A set of 5
earthquake records collected during the 1940 El-Centro ,1999 Duzce ,
1995 Kobe , 1989 Loma Pertia ,and 1994 North ridge are used to perform the dynamic time – history analysis of building models.
The Structural Software package ETABS are used to develop the
considered different building models. The equivalent static force ( EQSF),
dynamic response spectrum (RS) and time-history analysis methods are
defined employing the ETABS as well.
The seismic responses in terms of building displacement , inter-story
drift, storey shear and over turning moment of storeys of building models
are investigated .The effect of existence of shear walls on the induced
seismic responses are also investigated for all considered different
configurations of the buildings . The obtained results from the performed
analysis show that, the type of slab system significantly affects the
dynamic behavior of RC building.
