Abstract

The hydrodynamic performance of five proposed permeable breakwaters is studied experimentally. The five models of breakwater here : pile breakwater (model 1), horizontal rectangle strips supported with piles (model 2), horizontal ⊏-shape strips supported with piles (model 3), double fixed box (model 4) and both of fixed box and strips supported with piles with 8 configuration (model 5). The research is designed to investigate transmission coefficient Kt for 5 models of breakwaters. Reflection and dissipation coefficient Kr, Kd respectively are also computed for model 5 only. About 500 experimental tests are carried out under normal regular waves with different wave conditions and breakwaters geometry. The dimensionless parameters such as wave steepness Hi/gT2, relative spacing between piles G/D, relative spacing between row of piles ȼ to ȼ S/D, relative spacing between strips C/W, arrangement of strips A, relative draft dr/h, shape of strips K and position of fixed box M are considered. Experimental results are explained and analyzed in curves form. The curves illustrate the influence the variation of wave climate, and breakwaters geometry on transmission, reflection and dissipation coefficients Kt, Kr, Kd. The present study found that Kt decreases with increasing Hi/gT2, S/D, dr/h and with decreasing both of G/D and C/W. The performance of model 1 were significantly improved by adding horizontal ⊏ shape strips with staggered arrangement and resulted in decreasing the value of Kt by about from 3: 25 %. Configuration of model 5 with staggered ⊏ -shape strips and fixed box in the front is the best performance than other configurations. The comparison between the proposed models in this study and the other pervious-models is applied and showed the reasonable agreement between them. Finally, empirical relations are represented by using experimental data. These relations are used to predict the performance of the selected different models.
