Abstract

The objective of the present study is to evaluate the effect of PG application on growth Performance, hematological parameters, biochemical, immunological state of the broiler chicks and to determine the efficacy of pomegranate as an anticoccidial therapy. In the study, a total 90 broilers were grouped into 6 groups, where; (Ctrl Group) fed the normal basal diet. (PPME Group): were fed on commercial basal diet plus methanolic extract of pomegranate peel (PPME) continuously from the 3rd week old at a dose rate of 0.5 gm / kg B.Wt. for a week. (Drug Group): were fed on commercial basal diet plus addition of coccicure continuously from 3rd week old at a dose rate of 0.25 g/kg B.Wt. for a week. The last three groups were infected and challenged with Eimeria tenella at a dose rate of 104 Oocysts/ bird, by oral gavage at the 2nd week old, where the (Inf. Group): fed the normal basal diet and kept as positive control group. (Inf. + PPME Group): were fed on commercial basal diet plus PPME continuously from the 3rd till the 4th week old, at a dose rate of 0.5 gm / kg B.Wt./ orally, after 1 week post-infection with Eimeria tenella. (Inf. + Drug Group): were fed on commercial basal diet plus Coccicure continuously from the 3rd till the 4th week old, at a dose rate of 0.25 gm / kg B.Wt. orally after 1 week post-infection with Eimeria tenella. Concerning the performance parameters; Body weight, BWG and FCR showed a decrease in the infected group all over the experiment. The hematological results showed normocytic normochromic anemia in the (Inf group), while (Inf. + PPME Group) and (Inf. + Drug Group): showed significant improvement in hematological parameters when compared with (Inf. Group). Serum total protein and albumin levels showed significant decreases at 3rd and 4th week in (inf group). Globulin showed a non-significant change in all groups at 3rd week & 4th week. ALT and AST in the (inf group) showed increases at 3rd & 4th week, while (Inf. + PPME Group) and (Inf. + Drug Group): showed decreases as compared with the infected nontreated group at the 4th week. Serum uric acid and creatinine showed non-significant changes in different groups at 3rd & 4th week. Cholesterol showed non-significant changes in different groups at 3rd & 4th week except in (PPME Group) it was significantly decreased. MDA level showed decrease in (Inf. + PPME Group) and (Inf. + Drug Group) when compared to the (Inf group). Meanwhile, GSH levels showed significant increase in (Inf. + PPME Group) and (Inf. + Drug Group) when compared to the (Inf group). Results of IL-6 and INFgamma showed increases in the (Inf. Group) at 3rd & 4th week while, there were
significant decreases in their levels in (Inf. + PPME Group) and (Inf. + Drug Group).
