Abstract

Aim of the study
The present study aimed at developing oral communication skills necessary for
English language teachers and increasing their self-confidence through using peer
learning communities.
1.6. Hypotheses of the study
The present study tested the following four hypotheses:
1. There is a statistically-significant difference between the experiment group
teachers’ mean scores on the pre and post-administrations of the oral
communication test, in favour of the post-administration of the test.
2. There is a statistically-significant difference between the experiment group
teachers’ mean scores on the pre and post-applications of the oral
communication observation sheet, in favour of the post- applications of the
observation sheet.
3. There is a statistically-significant difference between the experiment group
teachers’ mean scores on the pre and post-applications of self-confidence scale,
in favour of the post-applications of the scale.
4. There is a positive relationship between developing oral communication skills
in English and increasing self-confidence for English language teachers.
1.7. Variables of the study
1. The independent variable: Using peer learning communities.
2. The dependent variables: Oral communication skills and self-confidence.
In the present study, the researcher measured the effect of the independent
variable (Using peer learning communities) on developing the dependent variables
(Oral communication skills and self-confidence) for English language teachers.

1.8. Delimitations of the study
The present study was confined to:
1. A group of 32 English language teachers that was randomly selected of four
heterogeneous schools (eight teachers from each school) in Cairo governorate.
2. Applying the suggested programme which is based on peer learning
communities among four governmental heterogeneous schools.
3. Developing the required oral communication skills and self-confidence for
English language teachers.
4. The academic years 2018-2019 and 2019-2020.
1.9. Significance of the study
The present study might be significant for two reasons:
o First: It draws the attention to the importance of developing oral
communication skills in English language and self-confidence for English
language teachers.
o Second: It draws the attention to the importance of using peer learning
communities to develop oral communication skills and self-confidence for
English language teachers.
