Abstract

Nursing is a sensitive career that plays an important role in society.Nurses are the main persons responsible about a patient life or the patient at risk for suffering. Nursing as a profession is full of many work hazards that affect nurses’ quality of work life .presence of hazards reduce nurses’satisfaction with their work life which affect good delivery of patient care. The study was conducted to determine the relationship between work hazards and quality of nurses work life at operating rooms. This was achieved through assessing the types of work hazards at operating rooms, assessing the factors affecting nurses’ quality of work life and determining the relationship between work hazards and quality of nurses work life at the study settings.Study Design A descriptive correlational design was conducted.Study Setting The study was conducted in operating rooms at Menoufia university hospitals as follows: Cardiothoracic surgery operations at specialized hospital, General surgery operations at emergency hospital,(Orthopedic, Urology, Otolaryngology and Ophthalmic) surgery operations at the main hospital.Study Subjects The subjects in this study were operations nurses who accept to participate in this study.Inclusion criteria All Staff nurses in operations rooms at Menoufia university hospitals.Study Sample Convenient sample of (92 nurses) included from the operations nurses at Menoufia university hospital.Instruments of data collection Three measuring instruments were used in conducting this study:The first instrument: Work hazards questionnaire: was used to assess nurses’ perception of types of work hazards among nurses at operating rooms. The questionnaire was consisted of two parts (first part used to assess socio-demographic data, second part used to assess nurses’ exposure to different types of hazards). The second instrument: Quality of work life questionnaire: was used to assess nurses’ perception of quality of work life dimensions at operations rooms. The third instrument: observation checklist: which consisted of two parts which included; the first part to assess OR environment safety and the second part to assess OR staff nurses’ compliance to safety measures. These instruments were tested for reliability by the internal consistency coefficient alpha that was (0.96 & 0.97 & 0.96 respectively).Pilot study The pilot study was carried out on (10) nurses representing (10%) of the total nurses from different operations in study setting. The purpose was to determine the applicability of the study, the clarity and feasibility of the study instruments. The participants in the pilot study were included the main study sample because no modification was done.Fieldwork Before beginning to collect data from the study subjects the investigator introduced herself to them, explained the aim of the study and informed them that their information will be treated confidentially and will be used only for the purpose of the study; additionally, each participant was notified about the right to accept or refuse to participate in the study. Data was collected in the morning, afternoon and night shifts and the subjects’ response to questions was in the presence of the investigator to ascertain that all questions were understood and answered.Data was collected upon five months started from 10th May 2019 to 10th October 2019.Statistical Design:Data entry was done using SPSS (Version 20), quantitative data were expressed as mean and standard deviation and qualitative data were expressed frequency and percentage.Spearman’s test was used for to find correlation between study variables. A statistically significant difference was considered if p <0.05.A very highly statistically significant difference was considered if p<0.001.Results:• There is a highly statistically significant negative correlation between work hazards and quality of nurses’ work life.• The majority of the studied subjects (82.8%) were exposed to high work hazards.• Work hazards ranked as the top six types were: biological, psychosocial and organizational, mechanical, chemical, accidental and physical hazards.• The majority of the studied subjects (80%) have low quality of their work life.• Quality of their work life dimensions ranked as the top six dimensions were: job characteristics, psychological work environment, participation in decisions making, salaries and incentives, team work and supervisors leadership style.• The highest percentage of the studied subjects’ age is less than 25 years (44.6%), this finding indicated that nurses are mostly young, accordingly they have short years to work.• There is a highly statistically relationship between work hazards and quality of work life and nurses’ years of experience, education and age. (P value = 0.000).
