Abstract

Open heart surgery is a common interventional procedure for ischemic and valvular heart disease which is accompanied by postoperative care. The major indicator for the assessment of quality of nursing care is patient satisfaction which they perceive and that have to be fulfilled during hospitalization. Therefore, the aim of the study is framed to evaluate the impact of nursing training program regarding care of patients undergoing open heart surgery on nurses’ performance and patients’ satisfaction. A representative sample of 30 male and female nurses who are dealing with open heart surgery patients and 108 male and female patients undergoing open heart surgery are selected from cardiothorathic surgery department at Mansoura University Hospital. Three tools are used for data collection; nurses interview sheet, nurses’ practice observational checklist, and patients’ satisfaction. The results of the present study find that, there were statistical significant improvements after implementing the training program in nurses’ total knowledge score, nurses’ total practice score, and patients’ total satisfaction score. There is positive correlation between nurses’ total knowledge score and their total practices score in all phases of implementing the training program. Hence the study concludes that, the developed training program have a significant positive impact on nurses’ knowledge, practice concerning care of open heart surgery and patients’ satisfaction toward the nursing care provided to them. The study recommends that: training programs should be organized for nurses and especially for the newly jointed nurses to improve their knowledge and practice regarding open heart surgery nursing care, and community participation activities of the clinical staffs should be increasingly to get more and more patients’ expectations and opinions about nursing care and hospital services.
