Abstract
Through the last decade, technology has played a more crucial role than before, particularly in the city heritage open places, which are intended to be more attractive and significant over time. It has affected people’s behaviour, sense of loyalty, interaction with buildings, as well as their perception of place. Due to various causes, urban open spaces are losing their qualities, meanings, and characteristics in a way that is defined as placelessness, which emerges to describe the vanishing assets of public places, and the conflict forces between these values and the forces causing their degradation. Since the interconnection between such places and their users especially the youths is not achieving its role anymore, there is a raising need for developing the historical assets of urban open spaces in a non-ordinary way, that helps conduct their thoughts and reflect modern styles. This research focuses on the usage of Augmented reality apps (AR) as an urban intervention tool through the placelessness of urban open spaces, that gradually lose the hinge with their users among insiders and outsiders, as well as new generations of youths. This research considers a wide range of study of placelessness phenomenology. Definitions, causes, forms and degrees of placelessness are considered among this study. Afterward, a brief implementation inventory of AR applications in public places, concerning the placelessness phenomena, is considered as well. The research also presents a cluster of relations and considerations that have been observed. That is in addition to revealing and analyzing the factors that affect -in turnthe state of placeness in urban open spaces. The research ends up with an empirical study that takes place in Kom El-Dakkah district and into the placeless pia77a of Sayed Darwish. This is performed through using a privately developed AR IOS app to test the compatibility of this tool in covering the placelessness gap in the study location of Sayed Darwish pia77a in Kom El-Dakkah. This experiment analyses and correlates the preceding results, in addition to highlighting the relations between the three study aspects and presenting all outcomes in the form of relations and statistical charts. Finally, this research concludes the conditions under which AR technology could be used effectively to tackle placelessness negative impacts in heritage urban open spaces.
