Abstract Coronary artery disease (CAD), the arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the heart muscle grow hardened and narrowed. It can be treated by treatments such as lifestyle changes, medicines, and angioplasty. If these treatments don’t help, the patient become candidate for coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) (NIH U.S. National library of medicine, 2019). Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is indicated for patients with coronary artery disease to relieve symptoms, improve quality of life, and/or prolong life. It creates a new path to facilitate blood flow to the heart. Post-operative outcomes depends on the healthy lifestyle practices and appropriate control of risk factors (Bayomi, 2015). The aim of this study was to determine effect of perioperative protocol of nursing care on clinical outcome among patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft. Setting: The study was carried out at National Heart Institute in Cairo and in open heart surgical intensive care unit in Shebin El Kom Teaching Hospital at menoufia governerate. Subjects: A purposive sample of 100 who were planned for coronary artery bypass graft .They were divided randomly and assigned alternatively into two equal groups, 50 patients for each group: Study group (I).They were exposed to the perioperative protocol of care along with routine hospital care. Control group (II). They were exposed to routine hospital care only Instruments of the study: four instruments were utilized for data collection Instruments 1: Interviewing questionnaire. Instruments 2: Nutritional Assessment sheet. Instruments 3:Biophysiological measurement instrument Instruments 4: Compliance Assessment sheet. The main findings of the present study were There was a significant improvement clinical outcomes among study group than control group who undergoing CABG. There was a significant improvement in the total knowledge score among study group than control group after application of perioperative protocol of care. Conclusion The clinical outcomes of CABG and total knowledge scores were significant improved among CABG patients who followed perioperative protocol of care (study group) than those who exposed only to the routine hospital care (control group). Recommendation perioperative protocol of care should be carried out to all CABG patients at open heart surgical unit to help them improve their clinical outcomes . |
