Abstract

Pain is the symptom that cancer patients fear most as reported by extensive research. Up to 50% of patients undergoing cancer treatment have debilitating pain which increase to 90% of patients with advanced cancer. Treatment of pain in cancer patients is a fine balance, affected by a range of interfering factors, including the general condition of the patient, the co-medication that the patient is receiving, and the nature of the pain, which is usually a mixture of nociceptive and neuropathic pain. Patients with cancer pain are in a dynamic state, thus proper pain management should be provided concurrently from the beginning of treatment, and interventional pain management techniques have a specific role in the treatment of pain in these patients. US has been described as a simple and cost-effective modality for use with celiac plexus block and permits real-time visualization of the aorta and visceral arteries and enables diffusion of the neurolytic agent to be viewed without the aid of contrast media.
