Abstract

Rationale and aim of work: The present study aimed at
elucidating the possible antidepressant role of some narcotic
plants including Datura stramonium and Hyoscyamus muticus
on the damage of the frontal lobe as compared to the
antidepressant drug (Seroxat) for gestational depression on
mother and offspring.
Materials and Methods: After mating, plant extracts and
antidepressant drug were administered daily orally from the first
day of fertilization to parturition. After parturition, we sacrificed
both the mothers and their offspring after one week of delivery.
The frontal lobe wa” " ~ " ” excised and prepared for light microscopic
study using H&E, Congo red and Serotonin transporter
immunohistochemistry in addition to transmission electron
microscopic observations.
Results: Histopathological studies showed damaged frontal
cortex in the pregnant rat.
The treatment with Datura resulted in mild improvement
in molecular and external granular layers but no improvement in
the rest of the frontal cortex in most mothers and offsprings
groups at the histological, histochemical, immunohistochemical
and electron microscopic observations.
In contrast, the treatment with Hyoscyamus had more
improvement than Seroxat for mothers but not for offsprings
