Abstract

Sexuality is an important part of health and wellbeing. Sexual function is
fundamental in the female life .Sexual dysfunction is a frequent problem and quite
often underestimated in the community in general. It is defined as a disorder of
the sexual desire, orgasm, arousal, or pain, which results in significant personal
discomfort. Sexuality is still a taboo subject for most women. The sexual behavior
changes during pregnancy interfering with the quality of life and disturbing the
union of the couple.
Pregnancy is a critical period in woman’s life and, at this stage, sexual life
can be affected by many factors. Physical and psychological changes have a
significant impact on sexual activity. The most common sexual complaints in
pregnancy are decreased in desire, on pleasure and in frequency of intercourse.
In the present study, we used FSFI to assess the female sexual function
during pregnancy .The FSFI questionnaire was used in this study as, it is a valid
and accurate measure of the female sexual function. This questionnaire comprises
19 questions that evaluate six different domains of sexual function including
(desire – arousal – lubrication – orgasm – satisfaction and pain). The FSFI score ≤
26.5 is the cutoff point for women with sexual dysfunction. The study was
conducted on 500 healthy, sexually active pregnant women between June, 2019
and March, 2020 from obstetrics’ clinic in Menoufia University Hospital.
