3. Research Aims & objectives
The main aim of the thesis is to explore appropriateddifferent strategies to increase the green areas share in the Greater Cairo Region.
Research objectives:
• Put up an issue “lack of green area share in Cairo city” and its impact.
• Review the benefits of green areas on the environment and society.
• Show the main concept of the green roof, green walls, and urban agriculture farming on building scale.
• View and analyze other case studies for strategies that are applied to other cities.
Abstract
Lack of green areas is considered a limiting factor in economic, social, and environmental development. Lack of green areas has a direct impact on the ecological system, which lead to many environmental problems in the city, such as urban heat island, pollution, and dense urbanisation. Increasing green areas must be considered as part of the integrated progress of development that operates across different sectors. In metropolitan cities such as the cities of Greater Cairo,increasing green areas in building scale should be encouraged and promoted in high dense areas. There are many methods for increasing green areas; this research aims at exploringappropriated different strategies to increase the green areas share in the Greater Cairo Region. The first part of the study presents the theoretical framework for the metropolitan cities and the problem of lacking green areas and the importance of green areas in the megacity.The second part examines international and national case studies for city strategies and building applications of green roofs, green walls, and rooftops farming. The goal is to find out what the maximum potentials and problems of green areas for the suitable building and regions and determine the appropriate techniques for implementation and maintenance. As a result, the study presents a guideline that can assist in transforming the existing buildings, either roofs or walls, into an attractive green area. The final result, point to the importance of alternative methods of increasing green areas as a creative development opportunity for enhancing the quality of life, open spaces, and food security,in addition to the climatic, environmental and aesthetical benefits.Finally, the research states recommendation for increasing the green area share in metropolitan cities in the Greater Cairo regions.
