Abstract The effects of mixtures from plants (Trigonella foenum gracium, Hyphaene thebaica, Arachias hypogaea, Sesamum indicum and Phoenix daclyifera) with spirulina and whey protein on some biological and histological parameters of slim rats were studied. Fourty adult male albino rats were distributed into eight groups, seven groups were fed on high fiber diet for 3 weeks for induction of slimness. One of these groups was kept as a positive control group while the left six groups were given daily by 8% mixture of tested plants with 12% whey protein for 4 weeks. The eighth group still fed on standard diet as negative control group. Body weight gain (BWG), feed intake, feed efficiency ratio, kidney functions, liver functions, lipid profile and thyroid hormones were estimated. Results showed that body weight gain was markedly increased especially in the group (7) which fed on 12% whey protein and 8% formula of (1.5% doum palm, 1.5% peanuts, 3% sesame seed, 1.5% Fenugreek and 0.5% spirulina) as a mixture (5). When compared to positive control group. Also, this mixture significantly lowered the concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-c, VLDL-c and increased activity of AST and ALT enzymes but in normal levels. Furthermore, all mixture caused a significant increase in HDL-c and T3 hormone concentrations. For, Histopathological examination showed amelioration of histopathological lesions seen in liver of slim rats received the mixtures (1, 2 and 3). from that, this study recommended that intake of the mixture (5) as 12% whey protein and 8% formula of (1.5% doum palm, 1.5% peanuts, 3% sesame seed, 1.5% Fenugreek and 0.5% spirulina) as a mixture (5) had good effect on the biological, biochemical and histopathological parameters of slim rats so, it may be useful for treating slimness. Key words: Whey protein, weight gain, T3 hormone, herbs and plants mixture. |
