Abstract

Asphalt cement is considered one of the important components of
hot mix asphalt (HMA). Modifying properties of asphalt enhances the mechanical
properties of HMA. The practical experiences of the Egyptian highway network
showed that a high percentage of roads is suffering from fatigue, creep and
rutting in the long term. These stresses may be occurred due to the shortage in the
mechanistic properties of either the binder or the asphalt mixture as well as
the increasing of traffic loads. Therefore, utilizing asphalt additives for enhancing
the HMA performance has gained great attention from researchers.
This study aims to investigate the possibility of using different types of
additives ; nonterminals (Nano-Clay (NC) or Nano-Silica (NS) and High-density
polyethylene (HDPE), separately or as composites to improve the properties of
Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) concrete mixtures.
To achieve these objectives, a control mix was prepared by blending coarse
and fine aggregates with asphalt cement of 4.0, 4.5, 5, 5.5, and 6 percentages of
their weight. The control mixture with the optimum percentage of asphalt was
modified with the previously suggested additives.
