Abstract

Peribulbar block as an adjuvant to general anesthesia has been implemented and found to be potent and adequate method for pain relief after ophthalmic pediatric surgeries nevertheless, this technique is administered blindly and some drawbacks are reported including globe perforation and intravascular injection, extra ocular muscles hematoma, brain stem anesthesia and optic sheath injection.
This study is a prospective double blind, randomized controlled one designed for pediatric patients having cataract who were treated by surgery. This study aims to compare the effect of adding either dexamethasone or triamcinolone as an adjuvant to local anesthetics mixture in single injection peribulbar block during general anesthesia in pediatric cataract surgery regarding post-operative pain measured by visual analogue score (VAS) and time to first request for analgesia.
This study included 80 paediatric patients who underwent cataract surgery in the period between July 2016 and July 2018 at ophthalmology department, Faculty of medicine, Suez Canal University, Egypt. A written informed consent was obtained from all patients’ parents before the procedure after describing and explaining the details, benefits, and drawbacks of each combination. Moreover, the study was approved by the local ethical committee.
The study cases were divided into two equal groups; group I that received dexamethasone as an adjuvant to local anesthetic, and group II who received triamcinolone as an adjuvant.
